Lunch is 30 minutes and recess is 20-25 minutes. All grades get specials--my son had PE 2x a week, music 2x a week, art once a week, and STEAM or computer lab every other week. The school has a big focus on the environment, so there's a Green Team that kids can be a part of that work on promoting recycling and environmental awareness. Classes also try to get outside often to do lessons out there and there's several gardens around the school. This summer they've had the library open every Tuesday and one of the principals has cooked out; they also have had a mini-farmer's market.

I've been thrilled with all of my kids' teachers except for one. They've been wonderful to work with and I've felt that the communication has been good. There's a small core group of parents in the PTA who are very active. The school has book fairs, a father/daughter dance, movie nights, and a school carnival every year. They started a mother/son event this year though I didn't go to it.

I would love to know more about the flow of the day, like how much time do they get for recess/lunch and how things like music, art, PE, and computers are factored into the week. Where we are now is very over-crowded and the day seems very crazy to me, so I can imagine how it might feel to my 3rd grader. In general, how involved are the parents? How much are the teachers that your kids have had willing to work with you on issues or ideas? Do you feel that that principal and teachers communicate enough and effectively?

I've had one child go through and one still there. We've been overall very happy with the school. It has a very positive climate and our kids loved it. I've heard from friends whose children have IEPs that they felt their children received appropriate services. Do you have any specific questions?

Please tell me about your experience at Centreville Elementary School. We may be moving to Centreville with a rising Kindergartener and 3rd grader. The Kindergartener is coming in with an IEP with speech therapy for stuttering and the 3rd grader has an IEP with speech, occupational, and physical therapies and accommodations (more time and instructions broken down). We will be packing lunches and likely picking up/dropping off.
