Many people have 2 in a 1 bedroom, 4 in a 2 bedroom when starting out. Some make decent money and stretch their income right off the bat. Some have parents with money.

Kids right out of college in my field (comp sci) make 80K+; a 2K apartment with a roommate would be easy to pull off.

Roommate(s), no car, no retirement savings. Still leaves plenty of money for alcohol! Also helps if you graduated from a state school with manageable debt.

This is how I do it:
Parents pay for health insurance, phone, and cable
I split all living expenses down the middle with my boyfriend who makes double what I do

This. Plenty can do it without help.
It helps if you dnt have student loans or a car payment.
