+1. Why are you asking total strangers rather than your landlord?

Probably because they want to know what recourse they have if the landlord laughs in their face.

That aside OP - I hope you can last one more night, if the repair person is coming tomorrow. Now if the repair guy says 'i have to order parts and it won't be in til next week' the landlord should compensate hotel stay or something for your comfort.

OP here. The bolded is why I'm asking DCUM. If it was just me and DH I would probably be okay. But our family includes a 2 year old, 13 year old and 17 year old. We have all converged downstairs/basement floor with a box fan and a 5 ft oscillating fan. 2 year will not go to sleep. I guess I will give it one more night.

This. And the landlord is trying to get it fixed, so no he's not going to pay for a hotel.

I lived in a rental high rise where their AC was broken for about 3 days. People had to move their pets out because it was so hot. No compensation.

Go to HomeDepot and get a window unit or portable AC.

So if we do that does landlord reimburse us? Also putting in a window unit is not as simple as it seems. Window units are prohibited by HOA.

Lease doesn't have any language to address this.

OP, you can probably go on hotels.com right now and get a cheap hotel room for $70-80 bucks. Not worth angsting about it. File it under "shit happens" and move on.

Tyat is what we did following the derecho. It was not ideal but it was much cooler downstairs than in our upstairs bedrooms.

Also, go to the mall or a movie this evening, take a cold shower before bed, and just sleep on top of a sheet with the fan directly on you. You can make it through until tomorrow morning.

I just bought a window unit and it and the cheapest one at the store was $130. Then you need to install it. A night in a hotel would be cheaper and simpler!
