Retired public school teacher here.
He is correct. The unions defend teachers who should not be defended when it comes to incompetence and sometimes even, neglect and abuse.
I have seen it. Horrible teachers who have no business working with students are “rescued” by the union.
It is very hard for districts to get rid of teachers who are harmful to students.

I agree with him on choice.

Other countries don't have universal education. They track early. That is antithetical to our entire educational model.

Last night Donald Jr. stated that American schools are failing and U.S. students are falling behind other countries because in other countries people have the choice to go to other schools. He blamed teachers unions for the fact that students are "falling behind".

This just doesn't sound correct to me on several levels. Aren't the countries that are improving and overtaking US in education typically unionized? And their teachers are very well paid? In fact, isn't there a Scandinavian country that actually prohibits school choice-- i.e., there are no private schools, you have to send your kid to a public school-- which not much sacrifice because the teachers are super educated and love their jobs)? And country scores far better on international tests than US even though (arguably because) there is no school choice.

I thought the reason other kids are surpassing US kids was because poverty is increasing in US while decreasing in other countries?
