There is no harm in looking to see what opportunities there might be outside of DC.

But, I would love to live nearer my family for the sake of my children. When I moved to DC, I totally underestimated the value of raising my kids near my parents. But when I moved to DC, I didn't have kids yet.

Hm. It's a tough call, op. I've always thought that the reason so many new grads flock here is because there are jobs to be had. In that case, you might be setting yourself up for failure by moving to an area with fewer opportunities. On the other hand, maybe you're right. You should do some research.
