I get a lot of book recommendations from the blogs Brightly and What We Do All Day.

At this age my boys loved Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prarie. Very process oriented, some pictures and relatively short chapters. It was also a blast to go back and reread these as an adult.

My son really liked Oodlethunks as his first chapter book. It still had some pictures, some potty humor, and dinosaurs! Hearing him get excited about what the next chapter would hold was so cool

Can't remember if Nate the Great is a "chapter book," both both my kids liked that series at those ages.

Same for the Mercy Watson books.

You might also want to try Charlotte's Web and Trumpet of the Swan. We did them on audiobook, but I think the 4 year old liked both a lot.

Whatever after series is well written. It's about a bright and sister that go into fairy tails together. My DD who is 4 is crazy about them. We're on the 6th one and I'm a fan too.

So far the only chapter book my son around that age has taken to was the BFG. I think he liked that the chapters were short, there was an illustration for each, and the content was fairly silly. It also helped that he knew we were going to see the play.

We read to our kids together before bedtime, so mostly have been sticking with the younger books (allowing my 6 year old daughter to read to my 4 year old son). I think it's time to introduce some chapter books, but haven't found the right ones to keep them both interested. Any suggestions?
