When I went to Toys R Us, the guy at the counter directed me to the Wii U. He showed me the games for the xBox and explained how violent they were and not appropriate for young kids. For the Wii U, my kids enjoy the Wii Fit, Super Mario Maker, Minecraft and Super Smash Bros.

PP here. I meant to say that my child didn't have any real ability to master the controls until well into 6 years old.

The Wii U is the most appropriate system for a younger child (up until about age 10-11). Most of the non-violent, family-friendly games are on it, and if you get another system you'll be limited toward more violent and older games.

Start your kid off with Just Dance (it's on Wii U), some of the Mario classics such as Mario Party or Nintendoland (only available used) or MarioKart and see how it goes.

I love the dance game at the mall, which is on xBox Kinect. But I've also heard great things about the Wii.

Can anyone share their experiences with either for a 5 year old? Part of my worry is that she'll just bore of it after a while. They're quite pricey for us, so it's a big decision for me.
