That said. For us, it wasn't. We got no dx at 4 either, but at 6 the ADHD was apparent.
Same with us. ADHD diagnosis at 5. Meds made a huge, huge difference in DS, and our entire family dynamic really. We used the KKI clinic in Columbia for behavioral therapy and found it very useful. DH and I (and DS) travelled once a week from Alexandria for about 6 months for behavioral therapy. We were obviously lucky to have the flexibility in our jobs at the time to do it. The behavioral therapy mostly targeted defiance, and, once that was under control using the techniques, they showed us, we could see what other impulse-control issues were left over. That's when we got the ADHD diagnosis from the dev ped.
As PP noted, it is very hard to deal with the constant explosiveness and negativity on a daily basis. I remember those days very well. My DS just looked for reasons to be negative and pissed off about everything. Now with meds, he's actually a very sweet, happy kid with a great personality and sense of humor under all of that negativity that was swirling in his brain.
