I had this problem with those stupid colors that claim to only need 10 minutes before rinsing. Forget that. I use regular old Revlon Colorsilk (no ammonia which is a plus) and I leave it on the maximum time, about 25 minutes. The color fades a little in the first week because it does come out a bit dark, and then it looks great. I don't see gray again until it grows out.

Switch to semi permanent and do it more often -- might wash out more quickly, but it's not nearly as obvious as permanent. My hair looks much better since I switched and I'm 40 percent gray (natural brunette).

I have this problem too, but mine are on top of my head where I part the hair. I can't afford to go to the salon every 3-4 weeks, and I only need the gray covered at the part. I've thought of doing it at home in between visits, but have no idea how to match the color.

Sounds like you have some pretty stubborn grays!

Talk to your hairdresser about them so she can use a product that will pay special attention to this specific areas.

Mine does this too. You need to use a color protectant shampoo and conditioner. It helps a little, but some hair just doesn't hold color as well.

I try to do it every other day, but if I exercise, I do it then, too. So maybe 4-5 times/week.

Some grays are really color resistant. Talk to your colorist. Mine puts small papers on the crown while the color sets bc that's supposed to help the color hold.

This is me. I'm AA and have less than 10 grey strands that I dye a brown-black boxed shade (Age Defy 3.5). It lasts two shampoos for me. I'm think of Bigen next.

It may be that you have more gray at the temples than elsewhere on your head. If you are using a blue, purple or ash base tone--especially in a lighter shade--it may not have enough warmth to fully cover your most gray areas even if it is the perfect shade for your natural non-gray color. Also, the cooler undertones in every color formula (blue, purple, ash) tend to fade more quickly than the warmer tones, which is why so many blondes need to use blue-toned shampoo to keep their highlights from going brassy. So, if the colorist is using a shade that is barely covering the heavy gray at your temples, a few weeks may be all it takes to strip it to the point where the gray shines through.

You might want to ask about using a warmer or slightly darker formula. You could highlight over that to look lighter or cooler overall. You might also need to go for touchups more often or use some sort of toner at home in between visits. Most women I know need to color their gray at least every three weeks.

Another possibility is that something you are using on your face is bleaching it. Do you use benzoyl peroxide products like proactive?
