The "people" have been ignored, mocked, and left behind by the "elites", who have rigged the economic system in their own favor and imposed their social mores.
So the people may be stupid, but so are the elites, who failed to take the interests and beliefs of the people into account. Hence the bite in the arse that the people delivered to the elite yesterday.
