Ugh! This is why I don't use dish towels. Between my crazy kids and my other family members, I wouldn't know what is on them at any one time. It's wasteful to use paper towels but at least we're not sick.

Are you crazy? That spreads germs. This is not a difference in aesthetics, it's the difference in spreading the flu, mono, etc.

This is so weird, though? How is it less work than using soap-- and not MORE work than using the dishwasher (even if you rinse first, you don't have to dry)? I can see it being less expensive, for an extreme cheapskate, but not less work. Such an odd "habit."

You and your DH must put a stop to this.

"Fred, we know that this is how you do your dishes, but in this house, we either hand-wash them with soap and hot water, or we wash them in the dishwasher. If you would please just leave dishes in the sink, that's what works for our household."

My HUSBAND does this. Drives me nuts. Nothing has changed him. Nothing. I just go around behind him and rewash everything. No sense in making his crappy habit world war three. There are more important things to negotiate.

My MIL does this. DH has a conniption. It doesn't bother me that much but I think you do just have to be forceful about it.

I had 4 (male) friends in college who lived together and "washed" their dishes this way. After three of the four came down with mono, they amended their ways.

Yes my grandma does this. We actually get incredibly sick when we visit her (diarrhea, hospital visits and lots of gastro issues). It's been an ongoing issue for the past 20 years. I'm convinced she's Typhoid Mary (wish I was exaggerating). Her house is picked up and looks clean, but we all get ridiculously sick. She's older now so we're helping to care for her while we're there. We make sure absolutely everything goes in the dishwasher and we dump all the silverware in the dishwasher when we arrive when she can't see it. We love her and try to be kind, but after 5 of us ended up on IV drips in the hospital last time, it's all getting bleached and washed.

I would just keep telling your FIL no and that you use the dishwasher. Don't let him prepare any of his own meals or do dishes.

You just have to put your foot down...just tell him to leave stuff in the sink, because you want the dishes washed with soap before being used again. Ugh, so gross.

My MIL was like this. Nothing like picking up Tupperware and finding a dried onion on it. I asked her to just leave the dishes in the sink because I'm pretty particular about how I want the dishes washed.

I've recently caught my FIL rinsing his utensils off with water and then putting them back in the utensil drawer. Same for cups and dishes. Am I a bitch to be grossed out by this? Now I have to stalk him and after he leaves the kitchen I silently retrieve them and put them in the dishwasher.
