We took our DD to AFI when they were showing Some like it hot and also It's a wonderful Life. For both it was the first time I had seen these two movies on the big screen and it made a difference. Finding Dory is also a great film for 11 year olds!

Princess Diaries is great for that age! Sequel is kind of lame.

Check out the site and app for common sense media, they have great guides.

If you're interested in classics, I've recommended this book before: The Best Old Movies for Families by Ty Burr. The author has two daughters and so has done test runs of the movies on his own kids. His age recommendations are helpful and have fit my own experiences well.

If you are looking for a series to watch, I cannot recommend Wolfblood highly enough for this age group. Fabulous.

Some of them have strong language for 11, depending on the kid. And dark aspects. Know the kid before letting them see the Truman Show, Groundhog Day....Heck, even october sky has cursing.

By Middle School, these will be fine.

11 year old DD totally loved Singing in the Rain and White Christmas. She enjoyed both the original Parent Trap and the Lindsay Lohan remake. For newer movies, we both really liked the original Now You See Me that we saw on tv, and the sequel that is out in theatres now.
I'm so happy to be past the kiddie movie years!

Parent Trap (both old and new versions), Freaky Friday, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, A League of Their Own, Man in the Moon (with young Reese Witherspoon), Bridge to Terabithia, My Girl - though the last 3 have sad parts. Some of these have mentions of sex, but don't show sex scenes from what I remember.

Paper towns. I saw the previews and thought it looked awful, but the movie is surprisingly sweet and really about friendship.

I watched Ferris Beuhler with my then sixth grade son and he thought it was hilarious. Most of it is very mild by today's standards.

Has she seen the princess bride?

Singing in the Rain is another great one, as is My Fair Lady, Sound of Music and The King and I

What movies have you enjoyed watching with your tweens? Need some suggestions that will keep both DD and parents engaged. Don't mind some limited bad language but want to stay away from sex and excessive violence.
