Use a passport expeditor, it is worth every penny.

Agree with this. They scan and inspect it closely every time I cross the border and have given me grief several times just because my hair is a different color now. I only ever cross at the Thousand Islands crossing though, so maybe they're just extra cranky there.

I got that too! Had to explain that I paid good money for my highlights.

I also get grilled about the purpose of my trip, although that's mostly because I am generally there on business.

Go to the passport office with your itinerary (hotel reservation or tickets that you have purchased). Be prepared to pay a lot of money and wait all day, but you will be able to leave with your new passport.

This wasn't the DC office, but we managed to get a passport same day by showing up at the office 2 hours before opening and politely asking to wait to see if any appointment time opened up. It was the suggestion of an expediting service we called and it worked.

We've had issues traveling when our passports were within 3 months of expiring. So don't wait until then either! We couldn't get a visa and had to expedite.

We had this happen in April. We noticed the night before that a passport was expired (my DH thought it expired in Aug, not April).

You can only get expedited passports with an appt (or you can pay a handler to do it for you if you have 48 hrs) at a regional passport office. The only east coast appt that he could find with any availability within the next week was in Buffalo NY (he got an appt the next day for 9:30 am). The DC office was booked at least 2 weeks out.

You can also hire a passport expeditor. I think they guarantee 48 hrs- I have no idea how they do it.

In order to get an expedited passport you have to prove that travel is imminent (DH had to show plane tickets; you would need I guess a hotel reservation?)

Call but I doubt you can get it that quickly. Nothing to lose.

There are throngs of people in front of you... like us. We submitted for our kiddo's last week. They said to expect it back in 6 weeks. Luckily it does not expire until end of summer.

Call the passport office first thing. The potential problem there is that it's peak travel season so even their emergency appointments fill up and their automated system may not give you an appointment in time. But try it. You can also try your congressional rep's office-they can sometimes help with passport issues and may be able to get you an appointment as well.

So asking DCUM because there are experienced travelers and even State Dept people

Going to Canada via car in 5 days and just learned my passport is expired. Going to call StateDept passport on hurry number on Monday morning but what should I do

...go in person to state dept office even without appointment?

Try an expedite service? State dept website talks against them...

Try to fake it with expired one? Tidies show I am US citizen..
