Th se are great ideas. One other idea is a small music "boom box" - my same aged DS has one in his bedroom, and he listens to the radio on it constantly.

Does she have a DS?

Get her a Professor Layton game. It is a game of progressive brain teasers built around a story line.

A basket with easy to understand knitting or crochet instruction booklets, yarn and needles/crochet hook. Maybe some cute embroidery kits. You can find everything at Michaels or A.C. Moore.

Does he or she like to read? Maybe several books in a series like Harry Potter if they haven't already read them.

Sketch books and nice pencil sets might help pass the time.

I agree. My DD had a serious accident that left her mobility impaired. A friend gave her a rainbow loom. It was awesome. I know rainbow looms are out of fashion now but having something to occupy her, something that offers multiple variations and inexpensive was great. You could also teach her to knit/crochet.

Get her an actual bed loom. Forget the rainbow loom kids toy. You can get a loom for15 bucks.

Get her some nice beads for it and charms like Alex and Ani style charms. She can make nice bracelets for friends. Also supplies to make earrings could be fun.

Ask the parents what movies and authors s/he likes. If you can't think of anything, an Amazon card is nice.

Would like to get something to keep her occupied/entertained during a challenging time.
