OP here, the mastercard is a Target card...quite a good size company, I would think

This is not indicative of MC. This is the podunk bank that issued your card. I have a MC through Sears and never had an issue with that. I used to have one through GMC and never had an issue with this. Bigger banks don't tend to have these issues. My guess is that if your Visa card was issued by some smaller bank and your MC was issued by a larger bank, your experience might have been reversed.

We have a Visa through Chase and always do it online
