+1 When we were trying to figure this out, what really swayed me was reading somewhere that if you tie the allowance to chores, what happens when child is old enough to have other sources of money. Are they allowed to just stop doing chores because they don't want the money? No, of course not.

Five year old daily:

Sort silverware from dishwasher into drawer
Empty backpack
Clothes to hamper
Set table
Help with clearing

Weekly-ish:
Help fold laundry (mainly towels but starting to do some clothes)
Help put away own clothes
Help match socks

I'm debating rearranging the kitchen cabinets to have the dishes low enough for child to reach to be more of a dishwasher and full table setter helper, but I'm not sure if that would be annoying for grownups needing to reach plates.

Looking for other chores to add for the summer so will watch this thread

My 7 year old does not get an allowance. Aside from picking up toys before dinner each night, she is responsible for:

weekly -
sweeping steps (from basement to 1, and 1 to 2)
putting away clean clothes
tidying her room
helping in the yard/garden w/ the whole familiy

4&6, don't currently get an allowance.

They:

- clear their places at the table
- fold their clothes and put away (we sort it)
- pick up their rooms
- pick up the play room
- put all dirty clothes in the hamper

Same for my 8 yo except we don't have a cat. 5 yo replaces trash bags when the 8 yo takes it out. Both help fold laundry and put it away but not consistently. Neither get an allowance. All of us help out as part of the family. They like sweeping the kitchen floor but it's not really helpful, more fun.

Yes, we have a chore chart for these chores. He is responsible for putting his clothes in the hamper, picking up toys, etc. but those are not allowance related. He's generally cheerful and helpful, so we've not had many battles over chores.

He can do whatever he wants with his money, but that's only because he is a saver! He isn't even saving for anything specific, but he likes saving more than spending. He didn't get that from me!

^^ we ask them to do some additional things that are independent of allowance, just to make sure they understand they need to contribute and be part of them team. Sometimes I ask them to help set the table, but they are always required to clear their own places.

Our 8 yo old also gets $5/week provided he completes a set list of chores. P/u toys, make bed, vacuum one floor, water flowers, help with cat, help dad with trash. We have a "moon jar." We pay in $1 bills and encourage him to use it to divide them between saving, spending, and giving. He mostly saves and gives, though sometimes will want to buy a particular computer app.

Our 4 yo gets one dollar per week for keeping her room clean and helping empty the dishwasher (she hands me the dishes). She usually forgets she has any money, but sometimes will ask to buy a piece of candy she sees at CVS.

Sorry forgot to ask, and he is allowed to do what he wants with his $5? Or do you encourage him some how to save, donate?

I am thinking that starting this summer I would like to start giving chores for my boys to do and also maybe start to give them a weekly allowance. Something more structured, like on a chart.
Right now these are the simple things they do to help out
clean their room
pick up plate from table and clean off place mat
pick up toys after playing

What other things do yours do? They also sometimes put food and water down for our dog but I wanted to do something where its their responsibility everyday whatever day it has to be done.
