Yup, kids usually start doing it around 11-14, but some kids want to do it earlier. I have little cousins who are 7, 8, 9 who want to fast. Their parents don't let them do it every day, but they do fast.

I think it differs, there is no set age mentioned in the Holy Quran or Hadith just when you become mature or an adult and that is different from culture to culture. We started occasional 1/2 day fasts in elementary school and it was fun- we begged to be allowed to fast. Most people begin fasting properly in high school in this area.

It's compulsory by puberty. In my culture, we start practicing 1/2 day by 6/7 yo. Not everyday though. As they get older, they increase to full day fasting, more frequently. Some even manage full month fasting while in elementary. It was easier before due to weather.

Now it's hotter and during school year, it's voluntary for my kids, and the can even break fast in school if too tiring for them. I only request them to be excused from extended outdoor activities and lunch time from the schools, so they usually goes to library during these times.
