Of all the unhealthy decisions adults are free to make - find a way to let this one go. I imagine they could say something about you as well (your weight, your wine drinking, your stress from work, your lack of contributions to the world for being a SAHM, your speeding, your over exercising, your under exercising, your permissive parenting, your crippling helicopter parenting, you failure to enjoy life, your enjoying meat too much etc etc etc)....we all make decisions that aren't perfectly healthy, thats our freedom as adults and our prerogative to enjoy life how we want. Mind your own.

But they are wearing sunscreen, just not at the level you want. As long as they don't disparage it's use in front of you and your children, I don't really see the issue.

I'm sure there are plenty of health choices you make, that they disagree with.
Their body. Their choice.
It's not your place to question them or remind them every outing.
You look after yourself and your kids.

I never wear sunscreen unless I'm in the water or planning to be in the blazing hot sun for hours on end (which never happens.) I do wear a hat though. Sunscreen is loaded with freaky chemicals which you are then smearing all over your skin AKA the largest organ in your body. Think about it. The largest organ in your body is absorbing a laboratory cocktail of man made chemicals. You might as well be eating a steady diet of cheetohs and diet coke. Additionally, Vitamin D deficiency is very real and of much greater risk for cancers and other health effects than the risk of skin cancer. Given your particular experience the risk might be worth it, but for most people it isn't. Seriously, ditch the sunscreen and wear better clothes. And take vitamin D3!!!!

I used to put lots of sunscreen on myself but later found out I have vitamin d deficency so unless I am on the beach I do not put on suncreen. Also, I don't know the study but they say people who do put on sunscreen put too little on and also are over confident on how long it lasts. However, those few time when people don't put on sunscreen they are aware that they don't have it on and will go inside sooner than the people with sunscreen. Of course, I am not talking about those "sun worshipers" who go to tanning salons or bake themselves on the beach.

In the end, you can only control you. They are adults and have heard the warnings like the rest of us.

Ugh I feel you. My mil traded smoking for in worshipping about 35 years ago. She is super tanned and her face is always near burn and I worry that she will get skin cancer. However she is a lovely person otherwise and I have drillwd into her that my daughter will be wearing rash guards and sunscreen reapplied multiple times a day of she wants to take her granddaughter to the pool in a couple years. She never applied sunscreen to either of her two red headed kids either and they were pool rats. I can't make her do for herself but I can insist on particular care for my kid.

OP, the incidence of skin cancer has gone up with rising rates of sunscreen use. It's possible that when it breaks down, sunscreen can either make solar radiation more damaging or it can itself damage skin, making cancer more likely. It's also possible that it doesn't do as good of a job at blocking skin-cancer-promoting radiation (as it does of blocking a tan) and so it leads to greater incidence of cancer because you stay out in the sun longer when you use it.

It's a better idea to push your family (and encourage your kids) to wear protective clothing (hats, long sleeves, etc) use umbrellas, or stay out of the sun during the most dangerous parts of the day.

I no longer use sunscreen because of the research correlating it with skin cancer. I use a combination of the methods above.

My DH and in-laws are exactly the same way. I've talked to DH until I'm blue in the face and he still doesn't use sunscreen consistently. He knows the facts and he's an adult, so I can only scold so much. Meanwhile, he knows that the kids and I are constant sunscreen users, which means he knows his life is in danger if he fails to use sunscreen on the boys. I can only dictate how to parent my children. I can't parent my DH or his parents.

I get it, OP. It's frustrating. Like how people continue to smoke after losing a family member to lung cancer. It's nuts! But there's nothing you can do. You can't control them or make them care enough to change their ways.

So you and your kids have on sunscreen. Why do you care about if they wear it or not? And btw, the sunscreen in makeup is just like the sunscreen without the tint...


Because despite my frustration I love them deeply and don't want them to have to go through what I did or worse! I also don't think spf 15 is sufficient especially 4-5 hours after applying it.
