Just paid $1200 for a golden

You people are crazy, not just for spending money on a dog because you want a certain breed, but thinking its ok to ship dogs from one place to another....bonkers.

$2500 seems high to me unless it's one of those c section type breeds which might even be more expensive. I've seen great Lab breeders at about 1800. Type's of breeders who show all the way up to Westminster, do obedience and field trials plus bring pups and dogs into their homes.

Found doodles at 2900. Yikes. A 2800 doodle breeder wrote on their website

"As a small, home based breeder, we are unable to take visitors in our home. We do not have a kennel facility for visiting. Our dogs reside in our home with our family... we are unfortunately unable to handle the interruptions to our home life and the care of our dogs and puppies..."

I've gotten some dogs from breeders and all had visitation. At 6 weeks one normally meets the litter and sees potential pups. 8 weeks is selection time. One breeder was a small home breeder and had the whelping box in her DR and when older the pups climbed in and out. Another used a 2 sides windows home office [maybe 15x15] as a puppy room - had her desk in there plus converted laundry to grooming room etc. Another had a custom built gorgeous facility and also brought them into the gorgeous antique laden home. Yes the puppies lounge inside and play while people watch tv/eat/etc.

Yes, that's a very normal price for most breeds from a good breeder. If you're talking about one of the breeds that are more expensive to breed (i.e. English Bulldogs that require c-sections and in some cases IUI for breeding due to body structure), the standard price can go up to $10k easily.

I'm beginning to think that Bob Barker is an evil mastermind who cornered the market in dog breeding by encouraging universal permanent birth control for dogs, and is secretly a billionaire.

My 10 year old dog was $2400. Love him! I would hope to pay closer to $1500 next time though.

2500 is about right.

We paid 1000 for a very nice Golden Retriever but the same breeder has the "english" version for 2x that. so 2500 is not abnormal for a well bred dog.

But damn, she is beautiful, and sweet. Holy cow, everyone says most beautiful dog they've ever seen.

We love her SO MUCH.

We will also never pay anywhere near $5k again. :p

I paid 2,500 a couple months ago. A family member paid 3,000 but her pup was already spay.

That seems within the ballpark depending on breed.

Does this dog have show/breeding potential or would you want one on a neuter/pet basis? The ones that do not have breeding potential can be cheaper and still not have any major defects. (Our cocker spaniel had a cherry gland in his eye. He could see just fine and everything worked, but he could not show and the breeder didn't want to pass that trait on to offspring.)

Ours was $1800 but this was 10 years ago. He was already neutered, microchipped, and up to date on shots when we got him. Breeder was great and her dogs are wonderful. Price may depend on the breed as well.

I would say yes. We paid between 2-3k depending on the pedigree, ranking of puppies parents for our purebred.
