We know of 3 families that use a friend/family member's address in our cluster to attend a MS, but they live elsewhere. The one complication that comes up is that report cards get sent to that person's address. So make sure it's someone who you trust will get you the info you need!

You can ask for a COSA, but you'll need to have a compelling reason, like the PP said.

However, if you can just find someone that lives in the Whitman cluster who is willing to let you use them as a mailing address, you won't need to prove anything.

Keep in mind that this is quite illegal and your child will be removed from the school if you are caught using a false address.

Honestly, who's going to 'report' you? LOL! Like I said, we have 3 families in our school who do this and don't keep it a secret. It's definitely NBD.

I'd guess that the worst thing that could happen is they'd take you out of Whitman and put you back in your home school. They can't just deny you an education.

The parents could be charged with a crime.

Has this ever happened? And, what would the crime be exactly?

There are quite a few people who do this. It's not as if MCPS has the time and staff to monitor if each student actually lives at the address provided. And, if you're using a family address, even less likely for MCPS to ever find out.

You will have to have a good reason to ask for a COSA because Whitman is projected to be overcapacity for the next several years. I think they bring in trailers next year or the year after and an expansion is slated for 2020 or 2021.

There was a Churchill zoned kid in DCs class but I think he left Churchill for social/discipline reasons. That does happen occasionally.

I think faking the address is risky. If you aren't coming in from Pyle you will have to provide good documentation to enroll in the school. Because of the overcrowding people aren't going to be too chill about extra kids in the school. You could rent an apartment in the cluster - there are people who do that.

Why? Your kid's classmates will not be next door and you have to drive your kid to school everyday if he doesnt get a Sped bus. You haveto cheat if your kid is not in LTI.

What you are suggesting so nonchalantly is illegal.

1) Your child needs a special education program available at only one or the other school (e.g. Bridge at Churchill, LFI at Whitman)

2) Your child was attending the school before you moved. This is probably only going to work if he's a junior or senior, or if he's enrolled in some special program not available elsewhere.

3) There is some other specific reason, such as someone at Churchill has a protection order out against your child, your child has a life threatening medical condition and needs to be close to a parent's work for quick treatment . . .

This wouldn't involve a COSA, though--it's an IEP team placement. If the IEP team places your child in LFI and Whitman has the LFI program for your cluster, your child will be assigned to Whitman, no COSA needed, and MCPS will send a bus daily to transport your child. The only time a COSA would be needed in this case was if the assigned LFI program was at Whitman but you wanted, say, LFI at Rockville HS instead for whatever reason.

Yes, but OP didn't ask about COSA's she asked under what circumstances a child can go to a school outside their zone. COSA's are one option, IEP placement is another.

Whitman does not offer any magnet programs.

If so how? We are zoned for Churchill, interested in Whitman.
