When we retire, we are first selling our house and moving to the beach (we have a beach house). Then we are buying a small RV and a mid-sized SUV that can pull it. (Our current vehicles should last close enough to retirement). Then we are traveling for a few years. After that, we are either settling in the southwest (NM probably) or Florida - it depends where the kids end up and where our siblings end up.

As you stated, COL. We are not rich.

My parents retired to the Rehoboth area. The cost of real estate is very low, the property taxes are negligible, sales taxes are nil and apparently federal government pensions go farther there (dont quite understand why but apparently its a big deal). There are also good doctors/medical centers.

Bloomington, Indiana. A beautiful town, and because of the University, activities from operas to basketball games.

New Hampshire or Maine. I cannot wait to get away from this region of muggy weather, mosquitos, and strip malls.

Because my property tax is what I will be making in retirement. Plus I just don't like the way the area has changed over the years. I want to be able to smile and greet folks when I walk down the street and not be treated rudely. Not Florida and we have no family left.

It is impossible to predict where I will retire because likely I would follow my only child wherever she goes. However, given the choice maybe San Diego or Charleston or Florida.

Where are your kids, OP? How about Charlottesville or Williamsburg?

We are planning to retire in 3 years away from the DC area as it is too expensive. Where would you relocate to and why? It has to have good hospitals.
