So, quick note from me, I have little wavy hair and in 80s, yes I am old, my own mother took me to get a perm at 16 since it was popular. I ended up looking like sheep for my huge piano recital that day. I hated it, and my mom and everything. Now your DD might want this, but sometimes consequences are just tragic. My own teen wanted highlights so I let her, then she wants balayage, ok, but I think she will have top half brown, then blonde ends etc.. She ends up with more blond hair than ever, I ask the stylist what happened, then my DD shuts me down, saying it is great. Then she accuses me of telling stylist to do it that way, and why am I asking.. Then two weeks later she wants brown hair half way, and says stylist did it wrong... You get the picture, I am hundreds of dollars out for this, her hair is fantastic, but she is unhappy again. This is just to show what a roller coaster you should expect one way or another in regards to DDs hair choices. Teens be crazy!

I have very curly white Jewish hair and my mom started letting me relax my hair at 13 or so (she would have before but didn't figure it out). I might not allow that one but I'd allow it.

I won't get it done because of the risks, so that would be a no for my kid.

I got this done in college and it was great, and my kids seem to be okay... It was pretty amazing to me to be able to shower and let my hair dry on its own and have it look "normal".

That being said, I stopped getting it done when I moved, and never found someone new for the process. Growing it out took about a year and was a PITA. Also, I wanted highlights, and was always told to pick one to avoid frying my hair. Years later I found the croc flat iron and now straightening my hair is quick and it actually lasts until the next washing, even in DC summer humidity. Before the croc, my hair would wave and frizz the moment I walked outside.

Could you see if you DC would be excited with highlights and trying the croc? Maybe the right hair stylist could show her how to properly flat iron her hair. It's certainly changed my life!

My hairdresser won't do them, too toxic. And she smokes!
