I got this done in college and it was great, and my kids seem to be okay... It was pretty amazing to me to be able to shower and let my hair dry on its own and have it look "normal".
That being said, I stopped getting it done when I moved, and never found someone new for the process. Growing it out took about a year and was a PITA. Also, I wanted highlights, and was always told to pick one to avoid frying my hair. Years later I found the croc flat iron and now straightening my hair is quick and it actually lasts until the next washing, even in DC summer humidity. Before the croc, my hair would wave and frizz the moment I walked outside.
Could you see if you DC would be excited with highlights and trying the croc? Maybe the right hair stylist could show her how to properly flat iron her hair. It's certainly changed my life!
