WHAT? A $250 cut? Are you kidding?

What are they doing for $250?

(I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy getting your hair done at a nice salon, but $80 for a cut seems out of line with reality. We "only" have a $250K HHI so maybe I'm not enough of a high roller to "get it")

Yes, for real. I make much less than you and my hair is the only thing I'm vain about. I do my own manicures and pedicures, never get facials, no massages, shave/wax on my own. I'm willing to pay $100 for a beautiful cut, and trust my stylist implicitly. She does a great job and I willingly pay. I can't imaging cutting my own hair.

If the assistant were doing a chunk of the work, i'd divide the 20% tip between them, rounding up to even numbers, with more going to the stylist. If the assistant is just doing regular assistant stuff (like washing, etc) i'd give 20% to the stylist and $5 to the assistant. Though frankly all of this starts getting ridiculous with the absurd amount we're paying for styling in this era. I mean, my salon is pretty consistently busy even during the weekday - so the assistant/floor sweeper may do a few hair washes per hour. Tip alone she'd be making another $20 per hour above her wages at these generous rates - which seems like a pretty high wage for that role. I'm guessing they don't actually make anywhere near that, and most people pay more like $2 or $3 to the assistant.

Unfortunately, where I have been living up till recently (now DC), this is the normal expectation and anything less is considered an insult - you'd definitely have a problem getting a future appointment.

I never tip in cash! Hell I NEVER carry cash so that would mean no one would ever get a tip from me.

At my salon I include the tip in total payment. Color and wash is $65. I round up to $80. The stylist is the one who usually washes my hair so the whole tip usually goes straight to her.

I don't know of any salons in dc or ny that allow you to put a tip on your card.

Yup, me neither. When the PP said "I never tip in cash!" I was like, hmm, that's why I always bring cash to the salon.

To be clear, I tip 20% to the main hair dresser (for her and any assistants), and extra money for hair washer only ($5).

My haircut is 72. I give 12 to the stylist and 3 to the shampooer, unless the shampooer also does my blowdry. Then the split is 10 and 5.

When you're getting your hair done and the stylist's assistant does just as much of the service (i.e. color or keratin), if not more, how do you tip? Do you just give the whole tip to the stylist and expect that they tip their assistant? Do you give 20% to the head stylist and and extra 10% to the assistant? I never know what to do.
