I believe the Italian government actually supports Italian language offerings in MCPS.

The Deutsche Schule Washington offers Saturday AM German classes. That's what my kids do (no German in BCC Cluster). Really too bad that German is not offered. Despite common misperception, it's a very useful/helpful language to study.

My guess is a Spanish or French teacher picked up Italian and then some kids wanted Italian rather than they planned to have it. German is just a little harder/less likely for a French or Spanish teacher to learn.

No I didn't, because I was specifically referring to my kids' high school (Walter Johnson) and middle school (Tilden). The languages offered differ from high school to high school within MoCo so you can't assume that a language offered at one school will be offered at another. I was poking around some other schools' websites yesterday and there are significant differences in both numbers of languages offered as well as which specific languages are offered.

And yes, I agree with 17:19 it's odd that Italian is offered but no German -- I am just guessing it's entirely dependent on the teachers they are able to hire.

There are classes offered at the German School of Washington, DC -- my kids have been taking German class on Saturdays. It is private school though so there is tuition for classes. And there's only so much you're going to learn in a couple hours a week.

You forgot Arabic. My niece took it at Springbrook all four years and continued in college. The teacher was clearly very good because she's totally proficient including reading and writing ( the characters are totally different from English and moves from right to left) - so no easy task!

You'd really have to poke through individual school websites. I don't think German is a commonly offered language in MCPS, which is extremely frustrating. Our high school offers Chinese, French, Italian, Latin, and Spanish but no German. And at the middle school level our kids are only offered Spanish and French.

It's offered at the high school level. Though you have to contact the individual high schools confirm.

My child is specifically interested in learning German - is this an option anywhere? We're currently looking to move for HS (and MS for our younger one if it's an option at the MS level) so it makes sense to consider this, but I've had a difficult time finding the info on school web sites. Thank you!
