Multiplication?

First I just qiuizzed him when we were in the car, but it was random. It kind of worked, but did not stick.

Me running through flash cards with him is what really worked. The main reason for the cards is so that you can do I. Order, the shuffle and make them random, and hold out the ones that they get stuck on. Also, get ones with answers on ypur side. After days of this, I admit to going brain dead and forgetting the answer

Kids learn while being physical. I took my DD to an empty parking lot with numbered parking slots and would shout out "7 times 7!" and she'd ride to #4 and then #9. We were doing this for multiplication but surely you could do it for addition and subtraction.

Another plug for xtramath. It is basically electronic flash cards that tracks child's progress

Xtramath was the best for my dd. could do it in the car and it told her when she was done for the day (she couldn't get mad at me!).

We do workbooks and iPad apps. He's getting there, but doesn't know all but can figure it out. We'll do flash cards this summer. (we also do the workbooks to practice handwriting)

I asked this about times tables a couple of weeks ago. My son is in 3rd grade. We tried ixl on a recommendation and he really likes that.

You could reward him for drilling diligently.

For some kids it's harder than others - brain differences.
My son has a working memory issue in math, due to his ADHD (but not every child has the same ADHD symptoms). Memorizing math facts was PURE TORTURE.

Using Xtramath was very helpful.

I always found that the car is a good place to practice memorization - of math facts, spelling words, etc.

Just drill as you drive. Every time you go out.

He really has to have them memorized by third grade. Buckle down this summer. Is there a math class you can sigh him up for ? Tutor ?

My DS hated it too OP but the purpose of math facts is memorization. Working on recipes and drawing dots will not cut it. Just take it in steps and have him memorize; sorry it's not "fun" but not everything in education is. Believe me, he will get further behind in math if he doesn't master this.

I think this is pretty common with common core. Kids seem to understand the concepts well but the rote memorization isn't there and can hinder things when the concepts get more complex. The only way to get faster is to practice a lot.

Mine practiced with flashcards. One of them made their own cards.

Allow him to help out in the kitchen with recipes.

My 2nd grade son is not quick with addition and subtraction. He has Dreambox and Reflex math through school and hates them both. I made some old school flash cards but have any of you found a better way? Everything would be easier if he was more automatic instead of drawing dots for half of the problems. I know multiplication is coming soon.
