So at SSIMS there is a similar benchmark but it's for the Reading class. 6th grade students who aren't above grade level take a Reading class in addition to English (the name has changed, think it's now called Digital Literacy) anyone above the benchmark has the option of beginning a foreign language instead.

We are zoned for Eastern and from what I can tell from their website it does look like they offer both English and Advanced English. Maybe someone with a non-magnet kid there can weigh in on whether this results in more differentiation?

My kid is also taking that "Advanced" class and child has serious writing issues. So far all As in English...
Bar is so low that I do not even see it...

Question is is there differentiated instruction. First are there sections of English 6 and sections of Adv English 6 or is everyone in Advanced? From Edline it's possible to see how many sections of a class are offered. Second question, if all English classes are labeled Advanced, is there any differentiation between sections--ability grouping, differentiation in assignments, etc? Second question is harder to determine, only the teacher could answer definitively but students are usually aware of distinctions. Sounds like TPMS places everyone in Adv English. SSiMS definitely does.

Bar is so low that I do not even see it...

JW has in class differentiation. Same topics but different books/assignments etc. Most kids are advanced..which is not that advanced.

I'm pretty sure Pyle has advanced and regular. My kid's teacher said they are reading different books.

There are some middle schools that do not place all students in advanced english. Some kids take English 6, and others take Advanced English 6. I think it is like that at Eastern MS. So, perhaps at those schools, advanced English is actually advanced.

That's correct re SSIMS, it is a different peer group and different reading assignments, not sure if work load is different otherwise, it is mostly completed in class. Also older DC felt the distinction became less significant with each grade, either number of sections and/or percent of kids slacking increases. At least that was the perception among students. Second DC is in sixth and does say English is one of the better behaved classes.
