Subject: Oak View HGC
There is Girls on the Run. My child went to Mt Vernon in 5th grade. Also a field trip to see monuments. And a field trip to see Shakespeare.
There is actually an HGC curriculum so you can ask MCPS too, though I found that the Oak View 5th grade teacher added to it.

Oh, and the kids did have projects outside of the regular curriculum, like putting on a Shakespeare play, electricity city, in depth author study and more. There was one project per quarter, except Shakespeare, which was longer, I think.

We're one year out, but teachers are fantastic. There was a robotics club, and I recall them adding an athletic club, but not girls on the run. The clubs were run by the administration, so there were fewer options than you might be used to from a higher income school.
They also had school activity busing to transport kids within a certain neighborhood area. We were out of school bounds, but close enough in to be able to take advantage of that. 5th grade did have field trips, including going to see a Shakespeare play.
Don't know the school changes with the new principal, but we were quite happy there. The administration strongly believed in not overwhelming kids with homework just because they are gifted. There was a strong emphasis on the whole child and having the time to do other things after school.

Could anyone with personal experience with Oak View share any info they have about the HGC? I know that next year things will be a little different because 4th grade will have two classes instead of one. But could someone share specifics about projects/field trips and specifically anything special the kids get to do as a result of being in the HGC? Also, does Oak View have after school programs (stuff like chess or mad science...sponsored by PTA type stuff)? Does the 5th grade take a fun trip? (either the whole 5th grade or just the HGC).... Does the school have Girls on the Run? An student government? Just any info you could give me about the specifics of going to school there and especially being a part of the HGC I woud appreciate.
