Subject: Schools to apply for K for child with severe ADHD (should be medicated by then) and possible LDs
We are doing a sleep study. He has epilepsy and we are medicating now that's why we can't start the ADHD meds. He is very impulsive. He runs away although it's getting better and throws stuff. He occasionally has hit when in big classroom but that's slowly improving - he hasn't done it in some time at school but hits his sister. He is a huge sensory seeker. He is so inattentive that he pretty much wanders around the class room and will not participate. But, he's kind, empathetic , seems to be cognitively on track, has good speech. Just no attention span and hyperactive.

Although I don't believe they have a K program, I have friends with kids at Commonwealth Academy in Alexandria. But, I agree with PPs that public school with an IEP is an excellent choice as well, especially for the early years. Save some money while you can!

How is his sleep? I ask because we experienced a tremendous drop in ADHD symptoms when we starting giving our DS melatonin to help him go to sleep. He sleeps now an hour longer than before and has so much more self control. In pre school we had daily reports about behavior issues. In public kindergarten our teacher told us she was surprised to hear he had an ADHD diagnosis because she doesn't see any concerning behaviors. It was amazing. Maturity, social skills groups and family behavior therapy through Kennedy Krieger helped tremendously as well. We have not medicated yet.

Public with IEP. Request an eval now from your public school. Are you in child find?

No. Lab = Dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia- absolutely. Sometimes ADHD is present too but it is a case by case situation.

They wouldn't take someone I know with severe ADHD. Not if you are hyper and have impulse issues.

OP here - should add, the aide is in a private preschool. We are trying to get into the Child Find program school but have had a hard time up until now - here's hoping.

Technically Lab doesn't have a Kindergarten. The lower school doesn't have grades but the entry level is technically a first grade due to zoning issues. You could still apply, but they won't take a kid that needs a one-on-one aide.
You could try public with an IEP, Oakwood, Newton, Ivymount, or Auburn. Public or Ivymount will be your best bet.
Truly your kid's behavioral issues are going be the guiding point of what school will take him. Medicate, and even then or hope and pray some place will accept him. With or without medication, until you have a handle on behavioral issues, it doesn't matter what the actual diagnosis is.
We have a dev ped, but will wait to do a neuropsych until he is older. His diagnosis is ADHD, no speech delay, fine motor delay. We won't be able to medicate for some time due to medical issues, so I am not entirely sure what we are supposed to do.

Public with an iep is probably best option. Medication is not always effective and you want a place where he will be accepted with or without medication. For private, look toward auburn, though that leans toward autism.

My son is 4, and having a struggle in preschool due to severe ADHD. He has an aide. We are working with him, doing behavioral therapy this summer, and will try meds soon, we hope (medical issues). We suspect some LDs. Where should we be applying? His speech is within average range, though on the middle range, and he has some fine motor struggles. His big issues are impulsivity and a very, very limited attention span. We tried Maddux and were told to come back when we can medicate, so we may do that. Where else? We live in the Old Town, Alex. area.
Oakwood? Siena? Lab?
