Poor Barry Goldwater never got a chance, just because people thought he would get us in a nuclear war. He actually was a Brigadier General and in favor of gays in the military. Almost seems a moderate by today's Republican standards.

None of this is anything new.

I am an independent who for the most part thinks both parties are overly dramatic when they say if the other candidate is elected, the country is doomed.

But in this case, I truly am scared of what would happen if Trump became President.

I echo many of the sentiments of the PPs above. His rhetoric often incites violence, his political "incorrectness" means that demeaning and insulting minorities is acceptable, he is volatile and overreacts to slights and he is easily influenced by flattery (which many other world leaders will use to their advantage - look at how Trump reacted to Putin's compliments of him).

I can't even speak to his policies because I am not sure he strongly believes any of them. He has been on both sides of the abortion issue, minimum wage, tax hikes, protecting entitlements, etc. Maybe you could say his position on immigration has been consistent but this seems to be a new policy for him - did he ever speak on this before he began his recent run? Just as he is now backing away from his Muslim ban "suggestion", I can see him backing away from the wall and deporting all illegal immigrants after he became President.

And no, past republican presidents didn't make me feel this way. This new Republican Party has no empathy for anyone who is the slightest bit unlike them. George Bush ran as a "compassionate conservative" and I voted for him. I hated the decision to go to war, and the patriot act, but otherwise he was an ok president as far as I'm concerned. I thought no child left behind was well intentioned, although it failed in many ways. I applaud his expansion of Medicare to include prescription drug coverage. He stood up for Muslims and Islam and repeatedly said they are not the enemy. He had a comprehensive immigration reform policy. But congress never touched it. Not perfect and I didn't agree with several things. But he was sane. Like Kasich. Too conservative for me but I wouldn't go into a years-long depression if he had been elected.

What scares me is that he doesn't know what he's doing. He doesn't understand government, he doesn't understand policy, he doesn't understand wide swaths of the American psyche, he's totally winging it. Add to that, he's inconsistent and unpredictable - he's changed his position on taxing the rich, he's changed his position on banning Muslims, he keeps changing every few weeks. Honestly, I can't see what his supporters are expecting from him given how frequently he's changed his positions. I think that if he were to become President, the people who would ultimately end up feeling the most betrayed by him are his own supporters.

His ignorance, xenophobia, racism, and vulgarity. I've never been scared of other republican candidates. Irked by, in disagreement with - sure. But Trump is an embarrassment to our nation and a threat to our national security. I sincerely believe that.

Unpredictability. That he will put his ego ahead of the country. That he is a salesman and not smart enough to think long-term. That he believes in a winner-take-all society.
