Some in my circle make a faux cake for the baby to smash. Layers of ezekiel bread and greek yogurt, shaped into a mini cake. Guests get the real cake.

I wasn't going to do one but Giant had a deal where the smash cake was free if I bought a sheet cake, so we had a smash cake. It was 12 years ago and I still love that awesome photo of my kid covered in rainbow frosting. Do one or don't do one. It's not awful either way.

Generally not a fan of unnecessary fads like gender reveal cakes but I did have a smash cake. It was an opportunity to get some cute pictures of him on his birthday with cake since I knew the actual birthday party pictures wouldn't turn out great. I'm understand the smash cake hate but it was adorable watching him play with frosting and eat some of the cake.

Another annoying way for parents to curate moments that were once spontaneous and cute and turn it into an empty photo op.

And why is it a thing? Someone in my listserve wants to pay someone to bake one of these.

It is a cupcake or very small cake that you give a kid on their first birthday. You then watch them smash, play with and eat the cake and take picture of the mess.

It's a small cake made for a 1 year olds birthday. Baby smashes it in his or her face and the rest of the guests can eat from the regular cake. We just cut a piece from the cake for our kids, didn't need anything fancy, but people think it's fun.

Google knows.
