Just like the chess club isn't going to make your kid Bobby Fisher, and soccer team isn't going to make your kid Mia or get her a soccer scholorship, the after school program isn't going to make your kid fluent, but it's not a waste of time if the kid enjoys it.

My thoughts as well. Since we can't do the immersion program, the FLES would provide them with exposure to the language and we should supplement that with some weeks of Spanish summer camp programs.

Unfortunately, we were not on the waiting list. What about the FLES program and Global after school program? Is that total waste of time?

Yes, if you get a placement. But those getting accepted in 2nd grade are typically students that were waitlisted when the program opened. My DC was waitlisted and did not get a placement until the start of 2nd grade. She's been in nearly 3 years now and is doing great - teachers were surprised to learn that she missed the first year of the program.

DC is a rising 2nd graders and does not speak Spanish, and has not had Spanish in kindergarten or 1st grade. Will FCPS allow you to enroll in a Spanish immersion program in 2nd grade if the child does not speak Spanish?
