Almonds are a nut. Almond flavoring is from the almond. Therefore if school is nut free, then honey NUT cheerios are not allowed.

Cheerios contains "natural almond flavor", possibly from almonds, possibly from apricots. No peanuts. Hence my confusion.

Is it a "nut-free" school or a "peanut-free" school? Or both? Two entirely different things, although people with tree nut allergies and peanut allergies sometimes have both. Also there can be issues with cross contamination.

Honey nut cheerios contain nuts (hence the name), and because they look a lot like regular cheerios can be a particularly challenging food. A kid could easily think they look familiar and try one.

I would think that if nuts are in the ingredients, they aren't allowed. Chances are that nobody in the elementary school is paying close attention but you should follow the rule for the sake of those who are allergic. Switch to multi-grain Cheerios. They are still sweet but don't have any nuts.
