All kids at our school need a computer starting in K. Gen Ed and AAP kids.

+1 and I will add it has been part of the homework since then. The programs have changed but he has needed internet access since 1st. An IPad would have probably worked for us so far.

At our school all third grade center kids need computers at home but gen ed kids do not.

I have a 4th grader and their class is pretty paperless. Every kid except two of them bring their laptop or ipad with keyboard to the class. All tests, essays, school work is done online. They use google classroom/documents for everything. The teacher also sends her assignments via email to the kids and communicates with the parents using an app. There is a laptop cart in the hall for the kids that cannot bring their own computers. It was complete change from 3rd grade where they all shared and sporadically used the 5 computers in the classroom.

PP -- what school is this? We are moving to a different center for next year and what you describe is not what we are used to. No one has a laptop/ipad in our current center (or at least the vast majority don't). Hoping your school is not the one we are moving to b/c I do not want my kid to bring a device to school. In fact, they have been banned on his bus!

+1 Our center doesn't have this either. A few kids may have a Kindle for reading - as in 1-2 - but that's it.

HAving a computer and internet access was essential for our AAP 3rd and 4th grade experience. Right away in 3rd grade, it was clear that kids needed to have internet access at home. By mid-year, the kids were working jointly and simultaneously with other kids in their group on projects where they needed to be on-line.

IXL is required every week (math program on line) too. Some of the word work could be done using a dictionary and thesaurus in hard copy. But, you would still have to do research on a continent and a country and the like for various projects. You could go to a library I suppose. There were times they had to make a word find as part of the word study and that has to be done on a website -- or I suppose you could do it the old fashioned way (by hand). You also need to be able to print things out from time to time.

Our third grader has needed the home computer to view weekly assignments, to take eCART online pre-tests, to review online study materials posted by the teachers, and to fulfill weekly requirements for using the DreamBox math app. I think an iPad would be fine for all of those. We also used our computer and color printer to prepare a few special projects and assignments like Wordmasters but this was not a requirement.

Going from memory, the computer was not really used until the 4th or 5th grade.
