oP, I would not be telling every creep on Craigslist that you and your daughter live alone in that house! It's super easy to find you!!!! Please remove and repost with fewer details!

+1, Our mortgage is about $2000, utilities are $400 or so in Maryland for a small house. We could rent a room out if needed.

I'm a single parent. I own a small 2br house with a basement (that has an extra room if needed) and my mortgage is $1600/month. I'm not in a desirable part of town, but it's perfect for us.

You'll rent the basement out, no problem--privacy with own bathroom is key.

Jenny here, the OP. Thanks everyone for your input! I agree the rent is high -- but it's truly in the heart of Capitol Hill, which is expensive! Why do you think I need help paying the rent? LOL

I agree about the basement bedroom being awkward for a smaller child. It would be great for a tween or teen though.

Long story short, I'm probably going to have to find two separate roommates for the rooms, rather than another single parent or family. I've also adjusted the rent prices after consulting a realtor friend. If anyone is interested, here are the CL postings:

OP you should post the pics. I found them on CL.

Who wants to put their child on a separate floor in a strangers house? OP should put her child in the basement if it is ok. They are renting rooms, not the entire house. One is assuming the house is already furnished and at best they can only bring bedroom stuff. For $2200, move further out and get your own place.

I appreciate the spirit of this but a bit of an odd arrangement, I would not want to have my child(ren) stuck down in the basement room while your family and myself all slept in the main house... just a thought.

I agree with PP. it is a very Kate & Allie kind of thing. I hope you find good roommates!

Not for a large house on Capitol Hill, I just checked.

For $2200, I could rent a place on my own and for most single parents who could afford that rent they are going to want to do so.

As a single parent, I am not in favor of the a roommate situation unless the need is dire. It's not a stable situation and for children who already are facing instability in their family adding yet another layer.

Hello, everyone! My 9 year old daughter and I are looking for roommates to fill in my place on Capitol Hill starting sometime in July/August. I have two bedrooms available, and would especially love to find another small family to share with us. BONUS: We are in bounds for the coveted Brent Elementary school, and live two easy blocks away!

We have a beautiful, big house, 4 bedrooms/2 BA -- a sunny corner lot with a HUGE yard (great for parties!). Finished basement, dining room, nice kitchen. We are in easy walking distance to both Eastern Market and Capitol South Metro stops. It's an amazing location, close to everything -- Eastern Market, restaurants, Yards Park/Nats Stadium (we usually walk to games), and right in between Garfield/Marion parks. Also we are right next to the highway, so super easy for car commuting. One block from Results the gym.

My daughter and I are friendly and social -- she is a 3rd grader at Brent, and has been going there since she was 3 years old. I am a photographer/graphic designer and usually work from home. I would love to have a cooperative situation where everyone could lean on each other for joint grocery shopping/cooking, etc, and maybe even occasional pet/babysitting. We have two elderly cats and two hamsters. (We also love dogs, and our cats are used to living with one. Though probably introducing a new cat to the household would be challenging.) Our home is tastefully furnished with a lot of beautiful art on the walls.

Available is one large, sunny master bedroom with large closets, and a small basement bedroom with its own bathroom. I'm open to renting them separately or together -- $1400 for the MBR and $800 for the basement room (or $2200 for both). Utilities not included, and a security deposit of one month's rent.

Open to any roommate scenario that works, really -- family, couples, singles. But I'm looking for stability and cooperation in my roommates, and feel like a fellow single parent would be ideal! Please write if you're interested & I'm happy to send photos.

Thanks,
Jenny
