I'm 49 and what I've done, FWIW, is send a thank-you e-mail to everyone who interviewed me. Short, sincere, friendly tone. I also hand write a thank-you to the lead interviewer/hiring manager and send it that day.
I think the e-mail is more important because it arrives quickly. And the work world is all about quick these days. If they liked you and they felt you were a good fit as far as personality, the e-mail/snail mail will just confirm that for them, not make them think you are over eager. If they didn't like you or had concerns, it might not do any good, but again, being courteous is never going to hurt.
