Berkeley offers more diverse student body and cultural experience as well as more rigorous academic experience.

Probably Berkeley but Berkeley has a reputation for grade deflation while Harvard has a reputation for grade inflation.

I'd lean towards Berkeley for CS but want to consider other aspects - campus culture, other interests (alternate majors).

Don't use the AP credits. Those schools are very hard, even for the best student. Retake the courses and give your kid some time to adjust to their new school

Berkeley- it's an amazing school and there are so many advantages to being at a university close to where all your target jobs are!

Is comp sci an impacted major at Cal? And, if so, is DC guaranteed access to it? If CS doesn't work out for whatever reason, what's plan b? And is the "plan b" major impacted?

For graduate CS, Berkeley. For undergrad, I'm not sure. Check the student-to-faculty ratio.

A good friend's daughter is a freshman at Berkeley in Computer Science and is loving it! I have no knowledge of Harvard.

Which school would be better to study Computer Science and go into the CS field. Both are full pay and Berkeley would be OOS with no financial aid or merit aid and no aid from Harvard as well. Both would cost about the same with Berkeley about $6,000.00 less per year (Harvard about $67,000, Berkeley about $61,000) and they allow transfer of AP credits so about 40+ college credits would transfer and thus save 1 year of cost.
