I think it would be very difficult to play a sport and not practice at least five days a week. Is your concern transportation or the time?

We have had the same experience at TJ. I second going to the open house where your child can sign up for information about various sports and other extracurriculars. Participating in a fall sport is particularly good for a new student because of the opportunity to make friends during the summer.

Getting our child home from practices wasn't a problem for our family because we dont live that far away from TJ, but I know that a lot of families carpooled to the farther away areas, so that part works out.

Sports have been a huge positive of my child's experience at TJ. I do believe that the physical activity and camaraderie provided by being part of a team are a great benefit for both physical and mental health. My kid was definitely more efficient at getting homework done after spending two hours working out and practicing with the team every day.

Historically, TJ excels at Cross Country, Golf, Swim, Tennis, Soccer, and recently Field Hockey. Of course, this changes some through the years.

Boys soccer teams are really good (competitive). My DC plays a Fall and Spring sport and it can be very challenging. Late nights after games are tough. But, DC loves it and the team spirit is very strong - in general TJ kids are supportive of each other in the classroom and on the field. Maybe because the recognize how unique their situation is compared to other schools. The kids literally hurry as fast as they can home because homework!

Great team spirit. Go to the cluster party for your region and talk to the students there. Also go to Freshman preview night on 4/26 and talk to coaches there.

Lacrosse and soccer are both Spring sports...can't do both.

So my child is in the marching band and also the winter drumline, so not a sport, but a time intensive after school activity several days a week with weekend competitions.

It is definitely a challenge to fit it all in. It really helps if your child is able to plan ahead and work ahead on weekends and the nights they do not have practices. We lucked out because DC's IBET day was not the day after practice. But you can't really plan for that.

Overall, I think the sense of community they build by being part of a group/activity is well worth it. But I do feel like DC's grades have suffered a bit as a result. We have decided we are OK with that.

The other thing to consider is logistically how you will do pick up for the late after school practices. If you live far away from TJ, this is a real concern.

My son was accepted into the Class of 2020, and he was wondering how are sports at TJ. He knows that the sport teams are not great, or anything close to that, but he wants to have fun. How hard is it to balance between school work and sports. He plans on playing soccer and maybe try out lacrosse. Can anyone share their stories/opinions/advice on sports at TJ?
