I have two teens in my house. So far the 13 year old boy is still sweet (though I see glimmers of things to come). I'm holding on as long as I can. My 15 year old girl - well - enough said. OP, I feel your agony! Had to read the thread because I liked the title

Unfortunately for us, humans have evolved to the point we don't want them having to fend for themselves in the wild so we're stuck tolerating this behavior that is basically designed to be intolerable.

A friend once told me that if they were a pride of lions, her DH would have long since run off their teen DS, LOL.

There's a woman in my office with a two year old who can't talk enough about the precious things her DD does. I want to tell her to get ready to buckle up and hold on to her hat, but I bite my tongue. Let her enjoy the moment.

Our DD started building up to the new 'tude around 11-12 but now at almost 14 we've been in full swing for at least a year. It's awful. Angry and yelling when she gets up and then when she get home. Picking on her younger siblings. Ticked when we tell her to put down the ipod. Any perceived provocation from the outside world, however slight, flips a switch. What to say....

Amen. Twin 14-year olds here. So self-absorbed. So much attitude. Oy.

You know the comedy shtick:

"When I was a kid I thought my parents knew everything... when I was a teenager I thought my parents knew nothing... but then when I reached adulthood I realized they weren't so dumb after all."

Hang tough until the kid reaches stage three of that process. =)

Yea, you're probably right. Can we pack them full of birth control and just send them all to a commune together so we don't have to deal with them but they'll still be safe/cared for?

OP here. So help me, NO. 'Scuse me while I go plan some sort of Really Valuable Lesson in the form of a terrible, terrible chore. Like paying me for the privilege of gardening with a toothbrush or something.

In the wild, adolescent mammals are typically driven off from the herd/pack. I think the annoying, terrible freakin attitudes of human teenagers are meant to be the trigger of this driving off.

Hang in there, OP. Look at some baby pictures when you're feeling frustrated. That little sweetie is still in there somewhere.

Just venting. It's totally in the range of normal teen behavior over here this morning, but I completely get why in days of yore kids this age were booted out into the world. How this kid hasn't sprained his eyeballs from rolling them at me so hard is a mystery. Blargh. That is all.
