We always go to matinees which are half price. And we never buy food at the movies. That crap tastes awful, and who the hell needs food more than every 90-120 minutes?

Most big-chain cinemas offer matinee prices for the first showing of each movie, even on the weekends. Also, pick the 2D version if you can. The 3D movies are more expensive and I never felt the 3D added much to the movie. You will never miss it.

Non-3d matinee shows are the cheapest - adults pay the kids' price. Call me trashy but I let the kids spend $1.00 each at Walgreens before the movie for candy. Yes, we are the cheap family who goes to the movies with candy in our pockets. Last time I actually carried in a tote bag with water bottles and snacks and nobody noticed or cared. It's not only the expense of the food at the concession counter, but the huge amount of time we spend standing in line while 5 families in front of us each order a 4-course meal (hot dogs and nachos?!). I started bringing in outdoor snacks after the second time we were late to the movie because we were in the concession line for more than 30 minutes.
