I can think of MANY MANY other places to put said surplus....

Where is more important than education? Seriously?

Aftercare is not education. Moreover, $5/day is reasonable as is.

+1.

People, seriously, everyone (and everyone's wallet) needs to chime in to fund daycare for their kids ...

Cleveland is changing. There are a good number of wealthy inbound families (particularly in the dual language program) for whom a 5 dollar a day aftercare cost is nothing. Hopefully they have a sliding scale for the poorer families.

I have long thought that $5-10 a day for aftercare is a reasonable expense for most people. We are a Title 1 school with about 70% FARM kids, and $5-10 a day would be fine at our school. I think that it would be a better strategy to have there be an aftercare waiver that could be offered to families who truly cannot afford the $100-200 a month.

I would be especially supportive of this if it allowed schools to expand the number of aftercare seats available. Our school has 400 students, and we only have 140 aftercare seats. We have a waiting list every year. If we could double our offerings by charging a little bit to families who really can afford it, I would be all for it, as would most families I know.

After care is optional, and parents should pay for it. Professionals don't grow in trees, you know?

Same with a few other schools that once had free aftercare. From what I was told it will be $5 a day school is in session.

I was surprised to see today when registering my son that Cleveland Elementary after care is no longer free. We never received any update from the school on this. Has anyone heard anything?
