Because there's no hope I'll look good no matter what so I may as well save the cash.

I don't find current fashions beautiful. I am bored of the clothes that I see.

Not all women are reaching the height of their household income in their mid-40s. This is also an age when a lot couples start to divorce and divorced women in general have lower HHI than married.

Mid-40s and up is also when parents start having to pay for college (or private high schools if they haven't done private elementary & middle school) and that takes a chunk out of HHI.

And then there's the wisdom factor. The older you get the more you realize what is important in life. Maybe women would prefer to spend money on other things, like traveling. Or fixing up their homes. Maybe they already have a lot of nice classic pieces in their wardrobes that don't need replacing.

Or maybe they just look at the current ugly fashion offerings and think $%^&*(&^ this.

Because they stop giving a crap about what people think? I am about there...

Not going out to clubs anymore. Not buying cheap stuff that falls apart in three washings. Not shopping as a pastime anymore. Focused on other financial goals.

Not trying out different personas anymore.

"Women’s spending on apparel peaks at age 44 and then enters a long slump, according to a Goldman Sachs research report. The question is, why?

Why would a woman’s enthusiasm for fashion slow just as her household income is reaching its highest level and her career and social requirements are at their most demanding?"

I think its because women begin to lose their looks and their interest in fashion drops too.

Probably. But, so what. Why is there an expectation that a 50 year old look young and slim? People's bodies change as they age. They just do. And most clothing is tailored to young bodies, so people get discouraged, annoyed, or just set in what they like & they stick to that. Not a big deal.

+1 I actually realized this before my 40's.

Because she's made it. She's done. Plus as midsections widen it becomes a lot less fun to shop because they feel like everything looks like crap anyway.

Also, my sister is doing this lately "It all comes back around in fashion so I'm done- my wardrobe's good- I have every style"... forget that the colorways and cut/style are actually slightly different...

16:44 here. I should have added this to my list. Basically everything I see in the stores and out on the street--EVERYTHING!--I think to myself, "I had one just like that in 19xx." And sometimes, it's actually still in my closet, LOL. (This definitely adds to the boredom factor.)

Frankly I don't have that many different things to dress for. I have nice work clothes but they tend to be classics (think black suits) so don't need to be replaced frequently. When we go out its to friends houses, restaurants, etc. I don't need a new club outfit every weekend. I spend the summer at the beach which is super casual.

+1000! Also, with fashion trends, she's probably already gone through whatever trend at least twice in her life. She realizes that it's all bullshit. Clean clothes that fit are the way to go.

In my case, it's partly because I am paying for college now and can't afford to shop as much these days. And it's partly because I think so much of what I see in the stores is dreck.

But I also find that I am just weary of the bullshit. Time is precious. Do I really want to spend it thinking about whether I should be wearing boot cuts or skinnies, low-cut or high-waist? What a fucking bore.

And, as the report notes, I'm at my highest level. I no longer need to dress for the job I want. I have the job I want, and I'm damn good at it, thankyouverymuch, and now I'm the one who gets to decide what I think a person in this job should look like.
