Why do you even care what goes in their house? Focus on your life and what makes you and your family happy and stop caring about (ie, judging) what others do.

+1. My DH works international relief. He goes away for 6-8 weeks at a time during which time we maybe speak 1x a week and exchange a couple emails. He was on travel the first 4 out of 6 months of our daughter's life. It didn't bother me. I have plenty of friends and interests and can handle life on my own.

I also have interests outside my family. I think never being away from the family for more than a couple nights is unhealthy, actually. In fact it sounds quite stifling and depressing to me.

But, fortunately, my opinion of your family life is irrelevant.

Let people arrange their lives however they want. MYOB.

Fellow military wife here--I hear you!

5 days once per year is not excessive. Your friend should take a similar trip with her friends or sister or mom...or even just by herself, doing something she enjoys.

DH has Been doing this long before we met. It's a mix of men in his family (dad, BIL, uncles, cousins) and friends. They are gone between 5-7 days. Dh skipped one year when DS was a newborn.

I tend to take girls nights vs girl trips. Between work and finances, it's almost impossible for us to plan a girls trip. Dh takes far fewer nights than I do.

It works great for us. I find it odd that you think 5 days once a year is excessive. Is she complaining about it? Does it upset her?

One of my friend's husband takes an annual trip to go golfing. With his buddies. For five days. They have young children and she doesn't take similar weekends. I know every couple has their own agreements but doesn't this seem excessive? Is golf really something you can play that many days in a row?
