And Hopkins is private, so not a state school that OP is looking for. Maryland "has" Annapolis only in terms of geography. And if U. of MD College Park is a stretch for OP's son, there's no way he's getting into either Hopkins or Annapolis.
Yup, so if you are an average engineering student in Maryland and can't get into UMCP, your choice is UMBC, community college, or pay more to go out of state. Sucks.
PP who corrected the "Virginia only has" nonsense. But UMBC isn't the disappointing option you assume. It's a solid choice. I know people who are doing incredibly well from there.

OP - I think those 3 pathways are good options. Without knowing his stats, not sure if he can qualify for merits at OOS schools.

If he goes to Montgomery college he will still be home and he still might not get into the Engineering program.
If he goes to UMBC he can live away from home, possible not come home and then have the option of going to UMCP or staying at UMBC.
Other Options... Delaware, Colorado, NC State, Arizona, Lehigh, Auburn, Stony Brook, Dayton

Go to UMBC or buckle down in community college and get As. You can transfer to UMD in 1 year and you got all the dropout classes out of the way.

OP here..Thanks for the feedback. What are the chances of MC and then a transfer to UMCP for science or engineering?

My DS is also looking to apply at UMBC for engineering next year because UMCP will be a stretch. I hate that there are so few options for in state engineering programs in Maryland. Would love to hear more about the engineering program at UMBC because that may be his only option.

I think my son would get in to UMBC. He is interested in Engineering but sounds like he will be home every weekend with that option. Where else should we look for a bit more campus life (doesn't have to be in state). I think engineering at UMCP will be a stretch (though he will likely apply)
