There is a good, once-a-week immersion program if the child is not lucky enough to enter a full-time program. EasySpanish123.com is a great resource, with classes on Saturday mornings. The classes are from 9-12 (not just a single-hour tidbit) with a recess and take place in modern classrooms maintained in a church in Tenleytown, DC. Kids as young as 5 are accepted and the teachers are great. Forms a nice basis for later enrollment in a full-time immersion program. I understand there is an open house on Jan 19 from 10-11am.

My DS is taking Mandarin there with a great teacher and is getting a lot out of it. I think, like everything, a lot depends on the particular teacher. It is a good option for us since we are in FCPS and we want our DS to have some exposure.

First of all, we tried it a few months back and I can tell you that it looks and feels tired and terrible. It was very old school- nothing immersion like.

Our son did Language Stars from 18 months until he was 3.5 years old. We moved out of the area. We enrolled him in a full immersion school. He has done 3yo, PK, and is finishing up K. Language Stars gave him an incredible base to start his immersion program from. His teachers (native speakers) don't believe we don't speak the target language at home because he easily grasps and remembers new words, and his accent is spot on. That's all due to LS and the early language exposure.

You just need to marry your expectations to what LS provides. If you are planning on doing immersion school in the future, it is a great base for that. If you want your kid to sing, play games, do crafts, and pick up some vocabulary, it is great for that. If you want your child to gain fluency from an hour or two per week program, then you will be disappointed.

As for class size, when we attended it varied from just a couple kids to about eight kids. Sometimes he was the only kid there, so he basically received one-on-one tutoring those days.

They used to offer free classes. If they still do, I suggest trying it out. Then decide.

I did look into it but was not sure about the approach. It seemed boring for a 6 year old.

Have you tried Langauge stars in Alexandria?
Somehow it looks not very inspiring and old school?? What are the class sizes ?
