Ok. You have a fuel efficient car. Big deal. Oil from the ME is rarely refined into gasoline. And if it did, Dubai generates very little income from the petroleum business. Roughly, 5 % of their GDP. They are, however, the workd's largest re-exporter. So, given your moral superiority, I am certain you have checked the provenance of all of the items you use and regularly purchase. Including all those cut flowers, many of which are grown in east Africa and then distributed through Dubai.

For suggestions on both cities, go post on the Dubai forum at expatwoman.com. There are a lot of people who have lived in both cities and you can get a lot of good info there.

A couple of things in Dubai. The spice and gold souks in Deira and the textile souk in Bur Dubai. The Burj Khalifa and the dancing fountains are cool. The Dubai Mall is right there, and it is a pretty neat spot. Who buys all of the crap in there I have no idea . . .

I wouldn't go to the Burj Al Arab hotel. You can only get in if you're a guest or have reservations at one of the restaurants and it is really nothing more than an overdone guilded orgy of gold.

Go drive out the Palm Jumeirah. The scale is unreal and the resorts are jaw-dropping.

If you are a massage person, there are tons of luxury spas, like at the Al Qasr hotel where, for a pretty reasonable amount, all of your stress can be pampered away.

Rent a car and drive to Abu Dhabi and see the Grand Mosque. It is really fascinating (including the world's largest Persian carpet).

It is an interesting place. If you like art, the Majlis Gallery is good, as are the new galleries in the Al Quoz district (those ar tougher to find).

Go on a desert safari.

2 days should be enough to see everything. Have fun.

I just flew through Dubai on the way to Singapore. It's a pretty good route to Asia and if OP is on Emirates it's a nice way to go. I didn't layover but have to say I was curious to see what it's all about. I have friends who have gone and liked it.

DH has a conference in Singapore and I will be tagging along. This is the first trip we are taking without the kids. We will be in Singapore for 4 days and 2 days in Dubai for a stopover.
