My nephew got into UVA, w&m, and many other top schools, but did not get into tech engineering. Don't fool yourself, Tech is a hard school to get into (even for non engineers).

New poster here who finds it comforting to know Va Tech (and maybe others?) might have some sympathy for or at least recognition of this issue. My DS transferred from a top-rated FCPS high school to a private school and his foreign language grade -- and accordingly his GPA -- tanked largely due (in our opinion) to lack of foundation/preparation.

Remember that Naviance shows end of senior year GPAs. GPAs tend to rise between junior and senior year as more APs are taken senior year and very few in first two years of HS. My DS was a 3.75 or so at end of junior year and graduated with a 3.93. He was admitted to Engineering at VPI last year. No sports but Eagle Scout, orchestra and a leadership position in a regional youth group. He took the harder APs in math and science and did well. Foreign language and English brought down his GPA. Leadership positions are helpful for students on the GPA bubble. The 50th percentile for his (top 5 FCPS HS- based on DCUM) was around a 3.8 for VPI.

Your DC has a very good chance.


Thank you so much for the input.. My DS got a D+ in Spanish 2 his freshman year and it's holding down his GPA.... We should have had him take Spanish 1 again as his jr. high clearly didn't prepare him for Spanish 2... wish we could rewind the clock.


The foreign language instruction in some of the higher rated high schools in FCPS is wildly uneven. Some teachers are great, some are easy graders who demand little, and others are tough graders who offer absolutely no help to students and play favorites. My bet is that Virginia Tech has seen similar discrepancies in many transcripts and will see through it.

My DS was admitted with a 3.4 unweighted GPA and 1530 SAT (math/CR) which is what they look at (business major - I doubt he would have gotten in engineering). He had a pretty solid application (courses/activities/essays etc) and upward grade trajectory (no Cs on transcript but lots of Bs early on).

Yep, you should look at the scattergrams. With a 3.7 coming from a top NoVa public, he'd probably need pretty good SATs.

But also keep in mind that the GPAs are final, weighted GPAs. If he takes AP classes his junior and senior years, his GPA should go up.
