Do it in person. Have a written resignation email ready and follow up with it after the conversation when you get to your desk so it is in writing and your boss can forward to her boss/HR.

If you do it on a Friday, it goes over better--gives your boss some time to mull it over and think about how they'll cover for you. I would prefer someone told me about their plans on a Friday.

OP here. it is unlikely that I will be marched out. in my field, that rarely happens unless the person was fired.

if it happens, i would love to take some time off and start the new gig earlier. there will be some prep and training i need to do for new staff, and some organization of the program area to hand off to the next person. i will offer to do some consulting after i go, as it will take a while to find a replacement.

If you need to prepare in any way (personal files on computer etc.), I would do it before handing in the resignation. I would essentially be prepared for the possibility that you might not have access to your computer and/or your office/cube after you resign. Sounds extreme, but it can happen and in fact is a policy at some places.

Agreed, yes, giving a month is mature, but you never know if someone wants you to leave immediately.

Tell in the afternoon, face to face. Be prepared to be marched to the door with your stuff.

I've always told my boss in person and had a paper in writing to give for my resignation. I think our hr requires a formal resignation

Have the meeting when it is convenient for both parties and lavish on the praise about all you have gained from your current position and that you are really excited about this new opportunity.

Can you do it tomorrow afternoon, and give yourself the weekend to let it simmer, and your boss the couple of days to mull it over.
