I would also just open them and air them out until the smells gone. After that I'd give them back to the kids. It's not like their going to eat them. Stop worrying about such a minor thing.

Get rid of them.

I don't have the energy to devote to storing gifts I don't want and remembering to bring them out and display them when the gift giver is around. I've never had anyone question it.

How about telling them the truth? They gave off a smell that gave you a headache. If they are so petty to want you to have a headache ... you've got bigger problems.
