Have you tried using the website called VolunteerMatch? You can set your preferences and they send out emails whenever there is a match. Usually the easiest ones to help out with would be reading to children.

Anyone know of a place my kid can get some volunteer hours in over spring break? Something in DC or close-in suburbs. Someplace that would be able to accept volunteers right away. She applied to some places a couple months ago but there are applications and interviews and waiting lists. I'd hoped something would have panned out in time for spring break but no luck. Hoping I can pull something together last minute for the rest of the week.
