Go to your chosen breed club website and look for 'breeder referral' or 'puppy coordinator' ... and then call them. They'll be able to tell you which breeders have current/upcoming litters available.

Once I decided what breed I wanted, I began asking people I saw out walking that particular breed where they got their dogs. Did on line research and then finally contacted breeders directly with questions.

This is great advice. I used the AKC website too, but never thought of going to a show.
